What does “quality” mean when we talk about technical content? Accuracy, of course; readability, yes; comprehensiveness is important; and clarity is paramount. It’s also important to be optimized for SEO and scannable by LLMs. However, while all of these are important, I submit that the single biggest factor in the quality of technical content is empathy. To place oneself in the position of the reader; to anticipate what they’re looking for, what they need to know in the moment, and how they absorb the material; to see your product from the viewpoint of the average customer trying to use it—this is the capacity you need to produce content that truly meets the needs of your customers.
Such has been my focus my entire career in technical documentation, and it’s made me an effective advocate for the customer and a highly effective writer and editor. It’s the quality I can bring to your content as well.
